Health Care Trend:
https://www.investopedia.com/articles/investing/042915/5-industries-driving-us-economy.asp
While the rest of the economy is expected to grow at 3%, jobs in health care are expected to grow at 18%. This increase is due to the fact that our population is becoming older and health care insurance coverage is increasing. I am convinced this trend will continue because Investopedia is a reputable site and this field has been growing for years. I think current health care providers, such as hospitals, and patients will benefit from this. People studying to become doctors will as well because they will have jobs to apply for once they graduate. There is a high barrier to entry for this field so it will not be easy to exploit. Becoming a doctor requires a lot of education and hospitals are expensive to establish. I see this as an opportunity because I recently have needed to visit the doctor many times.
Construction Trend:
https://www.investopedia.com/articles/investing/042915/5-industries-driving-us-economy.asp
Construction is growing faster in the economy than other industries; especially in Florida. The economy in Florida is growing faster than most, which brings new families to the state. This influx of people results in a demand for more housing and more construction. Investopedia believes this trend is due to both economic and population growth. Investopedia has a good reputation and is why I trust the source. New families moving to Florida would be the typical customer. Getting into construction has high barriers to enter but customers can easily benefit. I see this opportunity because my dad works in construction as does a lot of work in new developments
Tobacco Regulation Trend:
https://www.wuft.org/news/2019/01/23/alachua-county-approves-ordinance-making-it-illegal-to-sell-tobacco-to-anyone-under-21/
Alachua County just recently banned the sale of tobacco products to people who are under 21 years old. This is due to the increased usage by young people and the negative health affects that come with this usage. This information came from a local radio's website. I think that this regulation will lead to an opportunity for chewing gum. Instead of smoking, people will need to distract themselves with something such as gum. The typical customer would be someone under 21 who does not have access to tobacco. I believe that this industry is very difficult to get into because the FDA has to approve of your chewing gum before it can even go on shelves. I see this as an opportunity because I have many friends under 21 who currently use tobacco.
Car Emissions Regulation Trend:
https://www.c2es.org/content/regulating-transportation-sector-carbon-emissions/
Over time, cars have become more and more regulated in order to protect the environment. Their emissions, their weight, their efficiency, etc have all been set to standards established by the US government. This information is found in many places, but I used the C2ES site to learn more. This regulation provides an opportunity for companies like Toyota to create vehicles that are already meeting the standards. Their Prius is very environmentally friendly and is appealing to people who want to help protect the environment. Toyota's early dedication to find innovative solutions will put them ahead with certain consumers. This opportunity would be difficult to take on because there are many barriers of entry in the car industry, such as capital start up costs. I recognized this opportunity because my parents own a Prius and are environmentally friendly.
Riley,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your changes and trends because they were all things that I haven’t even heard of yet - especially the new regulation for tobacco products no longer being sold to people under 21. Your comment on chewing was also interesting because it ties into other tobacco and nicotine curbing products, such as nicorette. However, I feel like this law won’t have much of an impact because the rate of people that are beginning to smoke is decreasing.
Hey Riley,
ReplyDeleteGreat choices of articles, they covered a range of impactful issues going on in this current day. I think its amazing that tobacco products raised the consumption age from 18-21 in the Alachua County. Being that it is highly addictive it should be under more control and treated more seriously. Gladly the use of cigarets have declined due to the education on its detremental effects, especially on younger bodies.

ReplyDeleteHi Riley,
ReplyDeleteI think you did an excellent job of identifying a diverse set of economic and regulatory trends. I found your article both interesting and relevant. I think by comparing growth rates in a particular industry (health care) to growth rates in the economy as a whole, you have been able to successfully identify opportunities/trends in the economy. Being a successful entrepreneur requires an ability to analyze and identify trend that go unnoticed by most.
Hi Riley,
ReplyDeleteI am very impressed with the work you did as you did a great job identifying economic and regulatory trends. your example of Tobacco and the legal age being lifted to 21 in Alachua county was a phenomenal example. this is an oppurtunity many of us are surrounded by as we are college students near the age of 21. overall, i think you did a phenomenal job and I am excited to keep working with you in the future.
